29 January a group of freedom of speech activists rallied to defend wikileaks. The rally is in response to attacks made on wikileaks and key people involved in it by various government organisations around the world, especially America (where some senior politicians have called for him to assassinated) and also Australia.

After WikiLeaks in 2010 released cables on American ‘diplomatic’ reports on the world and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The cables reveal many examples of American imperialism, ongoing abuse of human rights that have being known by governments around the world who have done nothing to stop them and the warmongering nature of various first world governments amongst other information that beings to reveal the extend to which the elite in the world inflict human rights abuses and are corrupt to the bone in their quest for power and money.

The rally is also in defence of the internet, with increasing attacks on it to stop people accessing information and using to voice their feelings on injustices in the world. With the ex Egypt regime at one point taking the whole country off the internet as they saw how strong it is in creating a people’s movement for social justice. Also the American government currently trying to get twitter to release information about the accounts of supporters of wikileaks.

Currently Assange is being held under house arrest and is in an ongoing extradition hearing, with America trying to get him extradited to Sweden so they can then try and extradite him to America. He still hasn’t being charged with anything.

Bradley Manning has being held in in solitary confinement in an American prison, as the US government suspect him of leaking the military cables. He has being held for the last several months and still hasn’t being charged with anything.

Hands Off Wikileaks! Free Julian Assange! Free Bradley Manning!

In April 2010, WikiLeaks posted video footage of Iraqi civilians and journalists being killed by US forces. In July, WikiLeaks released “Afghan War Diary”: almost 91,000 documents exposing the US war machine’s calculated killing in Afghanistan. In October, the “Iraq War Logs” followed. Described by the Pentagon as “the largest leak of classified documents in its history”, it consisted of almost 400,000 documents revealing US war crimes in Iraq. And in November, WikiLeaks began releasing U.S. State department diplomatic cables.

Whilst Wikileaks has secured praise for exposing the shameful secrets of our governments – winning The Economist‘s New Media Award in 2008 and Amnesty International’s UK Media Award in 2009 – its founder, Julian Assange, has become the US government’s ‘public enemy number one’.

In recent weeks, the US justice department has established a secret grand jury to indict Assange under the discredited Espionage Act used to arrest peace activists during World War I. US political prisoner Private Bradley Manning – a 22 year old intelligence analyst accused by the US government of having leaked the “Afghan War Diary” documents – has been held in solitary confinement in a US military base since July, without charge. Assange’s lawyers believe he is being tortured to extract a confession of conspiring with Assange against the US government.

Meanwhile, sexual assault allegations against Assange are being used to smear the courageous journalist, and to offer a pretext for his extradition to Sweden, despite no charges having been laid against him. Assange has offered to cooperate with Swedish prosecutors, who revived the charges after they were initially dropped in August. The Swedish government was exposed as a de facto NATO ally, despite its officially neutral status, in secret diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks.

If extradited from Sweden to the US, Assange faces not only the possibility of a death sentence, if convicted for espionage, but also the wrath of conservative US politicians, some of whom have called for his assassination. Assange will face a London court again on 8 February.

Already thousands have mobilised in Australian and European cities to defend Assange against incarceration and extradition. The newly formed Perth Defend Wikileaks Campaign is urging you to get involved!

Next Meeting: 6.30pm, Tuesday 8 February, Perth Activist Centre, 15/5 Aberdeen St, East Perth (next to McIver station).

Next Rally: 2 noon, Saturday 26 February, Murray Street Mall (near Forrest Place).

Come to the Perth rally to defend Wikileaks and demand the release of Julian Assange.
Despite having been charged with no crime, Assange is still under house arrest, even after being released on bail.
World leaders continue to call for his prosecution or even assassination, with US vice-President Joe Biden labeling Assange a “cyber-terrorist”!
Bradley Manning, the soldier who allegedly leaked US military documents and footage, continues to languish in prison and is facing a jail sentence of up to 52 years.

Come and protest this outrageous attack on free speech and democracy on
January 29th, at 1pm, Murray St Mall (outside Perth Underground Train Station)
